Equality Schemes

What are Equality Schemes?

An equality scheme is an organisational commitment to tackling and responding to discrimination. It is also a legal requirement imposed upon public sector bodies.

There are three main equality schemes:

  • Race
  • Disability
  • Gender

Respectively they require pubic sector bodies to:

  • promote equal opportunity and good relations within their community (race)
  • demonstrate their commitment to promoting positive attitudes towards people with disability and encourage disabled people to participate in public life
  • eliminate harassment and unlawful discrimination and promote equality of opportunity between men and women (gender)
